A bit of history

The Santa Apolonia hill has a special meaning since pre-Columbian times, when local cultures used it as a ceremonial site. The Incas, who also came to this area, took advantage of the hill to perform rituals of worship to nature. According to tradition, the famous "Inca Chair," a structure carved in stone that is located at the top of the viewpoint, was used by the Inca Atahualpa to observe and protect his territory. This stone chair remains one of the greatest attractions of the place, connecting visitors with history and the Andean worldview.

This Inca Chair is a stone platform that simulates a seat and from where you can contemplate the entire city of Cajamarca. Scholars believe that this structure was carved with rudimentary tools and that its purpose was ceremonial. Popular tradition claims that Atahualpa himself sat here, a legend that adds mysticism to the place and makes it a must-see for visitors.

1. The viewpoint was named after Saint Apollonia, the patron saint of dentists and those who suffer from toothache. A small chapel in her honor was built on the hill, becoming a place of devotion for the local community.

2. From the top, you can see the colonial rooftops of Cajamarca, the mountains surrounding the city, and, weather permitting, a sky that changes color during sunrise and sunset, offering perfect views for photographs.

3. Going up to the viewpoint involves walking along a picturesque staircase adorned with plants and typical elements of the region. This route also includes benches and rest points where you can appreciate the path and take a break.

4. During the Carnival festivities, the viewpoint becomes an important meeting and celebration place. Ceremonies and cultural activities take place here, filling the hill with color and music, making it an excellent opportunity to learn about local traditions.

• Best time: The dry season, from May to September, is ideal for visiting the viewpoint. During these months, the sky is clear and it is easier to appreciate the panoramic views of Cajamarca and its surroundings. The rainy season (from October to April) also has its charm, but cloudy weather may limit visibility and make the path slippery.

• Visiting time: Ideally, visit the viewpoint at sunrise or sunset to capture the best lights and colors. Bring a camera and get ready to enjoy one of the most impressive views in the region.

• Comfortable shoes: The climb includes several steps, so we recommend wearing comfortable and safe shoes to avoid accidents.

• Water and sun protection: The hill does not have much shade, so make sure to bring water and sunscreen, especially if you visit in the morning or at midday.
