Discover Sillustani: a journey to the funerary towers of the Andes

ree

In the Peruvian highlands, about 34 kilometers from Puno, lies one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in the country: Sillustani. This place, surrounded by the spectacular landscape of Lake Umayo, is home to the famous chullpas, funerary towers built by the ancient Collas and later perfected by the Incas. These impressive stone structures are a window into the past, revealing details about the funerary practices and worldview of these pre-Incan cultures.

What makes Sillustani special?

The Chullpas: These funerary towers served as tombs for the leaders and nobles of the Colla and Inca cultures. Built with enormous blocks of stone fitted together with precision, some reach up to 12 meters in height. Their cylindrical design, with a base narrower than its top, is unique in Andean architecture.

Lake Umayo: Sillustani is located on a peninsula surrounded by Lake Umayo, a mirror of water that enhances the beauty of the place. The lake is also home to various species of flora and fauna, making it an ideal site for nature lovers.

Energy and Mysticism: Many visitors claim to feel a special energy in Sillustani. It is believed that the site has a strong spiritual meaning due to its relationship with the cycles of life and death.

How to get to Sillustani?

From Puno:

By car: You can rent a car or take a taxi to reach Sillustani in about 45 minutes. The road is paved and well signposted.

By guided tour: Various agencies in Puno offer half-day excursions, which usually include transportation, a guide and stops at nearby points of interest.

By public transport: From the Puno terminal, you can take a combi to the town of Atuncolla (S/ 5 to S/ 7). From there, a mototaxi or a 4 km walk will take you to Sillustani.

The site is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Admission costs S/ 10 (approximately $3).

Recommendations

  • The dry season (May to October) is ideal for enjoying clear skies and vibrant landscapes. During these months, temperatures are more stable, although nights can be chilly.

  • Bring warm clothing, especially in winter, as the weather can change quickly.

  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and a hat or cap to protect yourself from the sun.

  • Sillustani is over 3,800 meters above sea level. If you are not used to the altitude, take your time to acclimatize before visiting. Bring water and consider drinking coca tea to prevent altitude sickness.

Remember that Sillustani is an archaeological and spiritual site. Respect the structures and the natural environment. Avoid climbing the chullpas or leaving trash in the area to preserve this heritage for future generations.
