Located in the Amazonas region of Peru, the Gocta Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in the world, with a drop of 771 meters divided into two spectacular jumps. This imposing place was rediscovered in 2002, when a German explorer documented it for the world, and since then it has become one of the most fascinating destinations in the Peruvian Amazon.
The ideal time to visit Gocta is between May and September, during the dry season. During these months, rains are less frequent, making the hike easier and allowing for better visibility of the waterfall and the landscape. During the rainy season, which runs from October to April, the vegetation is greener and the flow of the waterfall is greater, but the path can become muddy and more difficult to navigate.
How to get there?
To get to Gocta, you first have to travel to Chachapoyas, capital of the Amazonas region. From Lima, you can fly to Jaén airport and then take a bus or private transport to Chachapoyas (approximately 3 hours drive).
From Chachapoyas, most travelers head to the towns of Cocachimba or San Pablo, the main bases for starting hikes to the waterfall. Cocachimba is the most popular route and is only an hour's drive from Chachapoyas.
Route from Cocachimba:
This is the most popular and direct route, with a trail of approximately 5.5 km to the base of the waterfall. The hike takes around 2 to 3 hours one way, depending on your pace. The trail is relatively well marked and offers stunning views of the jungle and the waterfall in the distance. Additionally, along the way you can spot various species of flora and fauna, including hummingbirds and monkeys.
Route from San Pablo:
From San Pablo, you walk about 6 km to reach the first drop of the waterfall. Afterwards, you can continue to the second drop, joining the path with the Cocachimba route to descend. This route has the advantage of offering views from the top of the waterfall, although it is more demanding and recommended for people with hiking experience.
Both routes offer the possibility of hiring horses if you prefer to avoid the walk. However, please note that for the last part, which leads directly to the base of the waterfall, it is necessary to continue on foot.
Recommendations for the walk
Wear hiking boots or sneakers with good grip, as the trails can be uneven and slippery, especially in the rainy season.
Wear quick-drying, long-sleeved clothing to protect yourself from the sun and insects. Don't forget a good repellent.
Bring plenty of water and some energy snacks, as the hike is demanding and you won't find any outlets along the way.
The jungle has moments of intense sun, so a good sunscreen and a hat are essential to avoid sunburn.
Hiring a local guide will not only help you get to know the surroundings and history of the place better, but it also contributes to the local economy.

The hike to the base of Gocta Falls is an amazing experience. You'll hear the roar of the water falling from hundreds of meters away as you approach, and the view of the waterfall from its base is awe-inspiring and magical. You can cool off in the pools near the falls (although the water is quite cold), and simply enjoy the surroundings.
This hidden treasure invites you to discover the majesty of one of the highest waterfalls in the world in the heart of Peru. If you are looking for a destination full of adventure, nature and some mystery, Gocta is an unmissable experience for any nature lover.
