In Peru, the Easter festivities extend to all regions, some with traditions more attached to the Catholic religion and others with an Inca cultural mix. This, added to the large number of churches that can be found in each department and the holidays, gives you a list of possibilities that you can take into account when planning a trip. Here are some departments that you should consider if you want to see a traditional or different celebration at Easter.
Arequipa
The city of Arequipa, known as the "White City", has an important celebration during Easter with religious processions and cultural events. Here the procession of the Lord of the Tremors and the Easter Vigil stands out. Also, if you are already in this department you cannot miss trying dishes such as chupe de camarón, a thick soup made with shrimp, potatoes, cheese and eggs; or the popular Arequipeño adobo, a pork stew marinated in chicha de jora and ají panca.
Cusco
In Cusco, former capital of the Inca Empire, Easter is celebrated with a series of processions that combine religious and cultural elements. In this department, the procession of the Lord of the Tremors is one of the most notable. Here you will find dishes like chiriuchu, a combination of different cold foods such as guinea pig, chorizo, potato, egg and rocoto. Also popular is tail soup, a thick soup made with beef, lamb tails, potatoes and corn.
Ayacucho
The city of Ayacucho is famous for its Easter celebrations and is undoubtedly the city that receives the most visitors on this date, so if you have not planned ahead it is probably the last destination you want to go to. Here the festival includes a series of processions, theatrical performances and religious events, including Pascua Toro. The Good Friday procession stands out, where numerous brotherhoods participate.
In Ayacucho, traditional dishes are prepared such as puchero ayacuchano, a stew made with beef, pork, chicken, sweet potato, yucca, corn and chickpeas. Dry soup is also consumed, a type of lasagna prepared with noodles, beef, chili and cheese.
Huancayo
The capital of the department of Junín celebrates Easter with religious fervor. Processions and liturgical activities are held in the main churches of the city. It is also common to consume dishes such as pachamanca, a dish based on pork, chicken, guinea pig, sweet potato, potato and beans, cooked underground with hot stones. Pork chicharrón is also prepared, accompanied by mote, sweet potato and criolla sauce.
Ica
Located just four hours from Lima, in this region, the celebrations include religious processions, theatrical performances and cultural events. The procession of the Lord of Luren is one of the most important and trying the traditional rice with duck or the purple mazamorra cannot be missing from your list.
Lima
Did you stay in the capital and think there are no plans for Easter? You are wrong, in Lima the religious festival is also lived with great fervor and includes processions and the traditional visit to the 13 churches that you cannot miss. In addition, very close to the Nazarenas church you will find many places to try traditional food and sweets.
In Lima, as in many departments of the country, the most popular dishes are fish-based during these days and the advantage of this coastal city is that you will have a wide range to enjoy.
