Quick guide to Tingo María

ree

Tingo María is a destination full of natural wonders, waterfalls, jungles, caves and a cultural richness that enchants any adventurous traveler.

Located in Huánuco, the dry season, from May to September, is ideal for visiting this city. During these months, rain is scarce, allowing you to fully enjoy outdoor walks and hikes through the nature reserves.

From December to March it is the rainy season, and although the vegetation becomes more lush, some accesses can become complicated due to the mud.

Do you want to visit this place? Here is a quick guide so you can make the most of your visit.

How to get there?

From Lima, you can get to Tingo María by plane or by road. If you choose to fly, you should know that there are not many flights available on the day.

Another option is to travel by bus from Lima (about 10-12 hours), a cheaper experience that if you want to do you can do it on Móvil bus from 90 soles.

What attractions to visit?

  • Cueva de las Lechuzas: A mysterious place where you can see nocturnal birds and stalactites. Ideal for caving lovers.

  • Tingo María National Park: This park has several hiking trails and allows you to explore its tropical jungle and numerous waterfalls, such as the beautiful Velo de las Ninfas waterfall, the Sol Naciente waterfall or Gloriapata. Remember that the entrance to the park is S/ 11 ($ 4) for nationals and S/ 30 ($ 7), this ticket is valid for one day.

  • Mirador de la Bella Durmiente: Enjoy an impressive view from this viewpoint, which reveals a mountainous profile similar to a reclining woman.

  • Mariposario: a place to learn about the variety of butterflies you find in Tingo María.

  • Honolulu Waterfall: this magical place has a waterfall with more than four falls and where travelers can practice rappelling.

Tingo María is famous for the large number of waterfalls and cascades that can be visited by trekking from thirty minutes to five hours. If you want to better organize your trip, you can find several agencies, one that I recommend is Nunash Tours, a safe agency that helps you with travel options every day.

What typical dishes to try?

  • Tacacho con Cecina: This classic from the Peruvian Amazon includes roasted plantain and pork.

  • Juane de Yuca: A rice tamale with meat and yuca, wrapped in bijao leaves, perfect for a hearty meal.

  • Chapo: A traditional banana and milk drink, ideal for cooling off after a long day.

Tips for your trip

  • Bring light, long-sleeved clothing to protect yourself from the sun and insects. Repellent is a must.

  • Hire local guides to take advantage of the experience and learn the secrets of each place. Guides are usually experts in the flora, fauna and culture of the area.

  • The heat can be intense, so make sure you bring enough water and sunscreen.

Final tips:

Lodging in the area can range from S/ 30 ($7 or $8) per night. A great place is Rinconcito House, which also has a garage and pool.

Local transportation is quite cheap and you can use a mototaxi to get around several places.

Tingo María is definitely a jewel in the heart of Peru, ideal for those seeking nature and adventure, and it is right here. I hope that with this information you have an unforgettable trip!
